The mobile information worker is something of high demand, and that rings true in the Dynamics AX space. Since the inception of Dynamics AX 4.0 was being built, a new team was formed back then, the Dynamics Mobile Team. This team is focused on giving to the Dynamics Community abilities, packages, tools kits, etc. all focuses on enabling partners and customer alike the ability to extend their solution to the mobile workforce.

Microsoft Dynamics™ Mobile 2008 - Pre-release of Framework

I just saw that on PartnerSource Microsoft has release the Dynamics™ Mobile 2008 Framework, for pre-release. I took a little time to look through this what this was all about.
But first below is a description of what this is about:

"Mobile Development Tools - Framework Components is set of tools and components for developing and implementing mobile business applications for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6.0 devices that connect to business solutions, such as Microsoft Dynamics™ AX and Microsoft Dynamics™ NAV. The two main components are:

-A Software Development Kit (SDK) that is an add-in to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and allows programmers to create scalable mobile applications using C# and XML.

-A run-time infrastructure so mobile devices can connect to and exchange data with the business solution using any of several network types, such as WiFi or GPRS. The architecture builds on.NET Framework 2.0 and Microsoft SQL Server technologies."

This is actually taking a step further for the development side of Mobile Development, than what was released last year. Microsoft Dynamics team is really seeing the serious nature and need for Dynamics AX data, and business processes to take place on the Microsoft Mobile Platform.

Now keep in mind this has a limited usage License, and is not meant for production. What this signals though is the ability to further create Mobile applications, that make use of X++ logic, and DAX data model more natively, and easily from the Mobile Platform.

I can point out one huge improvement that comes along with this release, and that is the credentials management. Before a user would have to possibly supply the same user credentials, over and over again. Making for a very poor user experince. Now a single user credential can now be associated with multiple end points, making it possible for a single login. Since user experince is everything, this is a huge improvement, and one worth checking into.

Mobile Solutions for Dynamics AX - A deeper look

One of the most interesting things that has been released around the Dynamics AX platform lately was the Mobile Solutions stack. This offering has an example Sales application as well as the development platform tools for creating your own solutions. So in order to start working with this we need to better understand it. With that said I started looking closely at exactly what makes up this platform.

Basically there are a few parts, for the most the part this platform is:

- Visual Studio 2005, .Net 2.0 Compact Framework add on project type
- Exmaple projects that show how these types of projects can be used
- Server side platform components that make use of Web Services and .Net 2.0, as well as the .Net BC
- Example web service extensions for your use
- A Dynamics AX instance

So with this you are actually developing a windows mobile 5.0 application, that makes use of the .Net compact framework. There is a new set of Assemblies that is made use of within the client peice. You also have, as part of your solution, calls to the web services from the server side of this platform that enable and expose X++ business logic.

So you could create connected and disconnected state mobile windows applications with this paltform, and make use of the platforms exposed X++ objects via the server side web services that are deployed. This is Targeted for the .Net 2.0 Compact framework, which in turn targets Windows Mobile 5.0 devices.

From here I plan on diving deeper into this platform and creating an example solution. The one given though really gives you a good idea, and the samples provided.
