Microsoft Dynamics Reinforces the Dynamic Business Vision at Convergence Europe

Microsoft kicked off its Convergence 2010 Europe roadshow in London this week, where Kirill Tatarinov, corporate vice president, Microsoft Business Solutions, opened the event with a keynote address that reinforced how the company is delivering on its Dynamic Business vision for customers.

Announcements made during the keynote include:

• A new global launch promotion for Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online at a price of $34 (€31) per user, per month for the first 12 months of service


• 22 new markets where Microsoft Dynamics AX for Retail will be available as of Feb. 1, 2011


• General availability of the Microsoft Dynamics ERP two-tier connector that accelerates deployments between Microsoft Dynamics AX across subsidiaries, divisions or branch entities, and SAP Business Suite at the corporate headquarters


• The Environmental Sustainability Dashboard for Microsoft Dynamics AX has been certified by Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), verifying that the reporting of GRI content within the dashboard is compliant with the GRI standards. This recognition makes the Dashboard one of only four software applications and the only midmarket ERP solution with the GRI certification in the software applications category to date.

The roadshow will continue in London tomorrow (Oct 15) and then move to Prague (Oct 18 – 19) and end in The Hague (Oct 20 – 21). Treebeard at Convergence 2010?

While at Convergence 2010, I talked to maybe the most knowledgable person, focused on Dynamics AX. His vertical focus was for sure in the timber industry, but more on the preservation side of things.

He went on, and on, and on about convervation, middle earth, and implmenting AX --- focusing on the Evironmental Dashboards, and was heavy into products impact on the environment.

Honestly, the strangest and coolest entertainment bit I saw at Expo was old treebread here. I did not really talk with him about AX, just in case your wondering. I actually don't think It was suppose to speak. It sure made the reception interesting though. Along with the others on stilts!

Coverage of AXUG Software Architect SIG at Convergence 2010

One of the sessions that I was lucky enough to attend at this years Convergence was the AXUG Software Architects SIG (Special Interest Group) for Dynamics AX.

This was a very, very interesting session that spanned a lot of different topics. This session was headed by John Smith and Jason Thorpe. Both AXUG members that are actively involved with helping promote and foster the AX community.

This was not a typical session in which you had a single speaker or two driving the whole time, but more of a round table session. Jason and John help keep the session going, and help start it, however allowed plenty of driving by the many people that attended this.

This SIG's focus is about AX Architecture, development, and being able to allow fellow Architects to share and build upon past exp. and current facing needs to help one another.

Some of the top topics discussed in this SIG were.:

• Change Management / Version Control. (A topic I have wrote about recently.: Using the Version Control Integration with Microsoft Team Foundation Server and Integrating Third party VCS with Dynamics AX 2009)


• Code Promotion


• AX Upgrades: Time for upgrades, estimating upgrade length, Functional Testing scripts and tools


• Agile development methodology, including project estimation


• Optimizing AX, SQL Server Performance, DMV's, IDM, use of SAX XML Processor vs. MSXML (XMLDOM)


• AIF, Integrations with AX, .Net BC vs. AIF - where and when

These were some of the hot and major topics covered in this session. There was some great points, and interesting things that customers were facing, and it seemed more than just one customer was facing some similar questions, and answering these questions in similar fashions.

It does seem to be that, from the techical Architect's side, either large or small companies, that similar trends and needs, along with upgrades, performance, change management with version control, integration seem to be the highest of priority.

With this post, I would like to kick off a series that covers these topics. To help dig deeper into these subjects, talk about what is being done now, what can be done, and what in AX 6 and beyond will help with these areas.

Convergence 2010 Starts this weekend

Well it's that time of year again, and what time of year is that? Convergence time! This year Convergence, as most of everyone is aware of, is being hosted in Atlanta, GA.

I will be attending Convergence, and will be tweeting while there. The tags will all be the #CONV10.

Sunrise over Convergence 2010

Recently I sat down (virtually) with President and Owner John Pence, of Sunrise Technologies, Inc., the Microsoft VAR I am a part of, to talk about Convergence 2010. I wanted to get John's thoughts on convergence, how important convergence is, and what topics he thinks will be hot ones this year.

The following is that interview.:



1.) John, for Sunrise what does Convergence mean?

"First and foremost it is a chance to connect with many of our customers from around the country. I personally look forward to this aspect of Convergence the most. Second, it is a great opportunity for Sunrise to connect with many of our Microsoft colleagues and share where Sunrise is headed and what is happening at Microsoft. Third, it is a great opportunity to learn about products in the Microsoft/Dynamics suite that could be incremental to our core Dynamics AX practice."

2.) What information will Sunrise be sharing at it's booth at Convergence this year?

"We have a number of new initiatives this year that we will be discussing at the booth. We are releasing in June a new version our industry leading Apparel & Footwear Template for Dynamics AX. We will also be releasing in 3rd quarter a new version of our WMS solution. We will be celebrating American Apparel winning the Customer Excellence award this year, and we are one of the launch partners for Microsoft’s new Retail Solution."

3.) What are some big things you expect Microsoft to focus on at this years Convergence?

"I this SAAS will continue to get a lot of discussion in terms of future product direction. In a similar vein, Microsoft will be discussing quite a bit the various business services they well be offering via the cloud. As always, there will be product road maps for all of the various Dynamics products, and how those road maps relate to the broader Microsoft story. I think BI and business reporting will again be a big focus this year."

4.) If you had to tell a CIO some key sessions that you would recommend, what would those sessions be and why?

"I have not seen a detailed set of sessions for Convergence yet, so I can’t answer this specifically, but the sessions I will be paying the most attention to are: 1. Latest product road maps for ERP, CRM, and BI products. 2. The major keynotes because they are always good, especially Ballmer. 3. The hands on demos in the Expo Hall. I probably learn more by just going to the Microsoft area and getting demos of anything I haven’t seen yet. 4. Spend some quality time looking at ISV solutions available for Dynamics. There are always some great new products being featured at Convergence.

One last point I would like to make is the biggest value to Convergence for me is the chance to network with other people who share your interests. I learn the most at Convergence from just talking to people. It is a great chance to talk with our customers, other Dynamics AX VAR’s and ISV’s, and of course Microsoft. It is really the only event all year that brings this constituency together and provides that kind of opportunity. I always get new ideas from comments made at the various break-out sessions or technical updates. The user group sessions (AXUG in our case) are always excellent at Convergence and provide another great chance to network. In short, you just have to be there!"

John Pence's Bio.:
John has spent the last 29 years tackling large scale IT and supply chain projects for a wide range of corporations. John spent the first 15 years of his career working his way up from programmer trainee to CIO at Sara Lee Corporation. Along the way he held numerous IT and non-IT jobs, including Director of Planning and Distribution for Sara Lee’s 400+ retail stores, serving as the logistics partner to Wal-Mart, and CIO of Champion Products. In 1994 John left Sara Lee to found Sunrise Technologies, a company focused on bringing advanced supply chain solutions to the apparel and textile industries. Sunrise Technologies has grown into a Gold Certified Microsoft partner specializing in the Dynamics AX ERP solution. Sunrise is headquartered in Winston-Salem, NC, with offices in Dallas, TX, Los Angeles, CA, and Xi’an China.

Sunrise Customer - American Apparel - Will recieve award at Convergence 2010

Sunrise Technologies, Inc. (www.sunriseconsult.com) announced today, about one of out Customers, American Apparel, will be honored at this years upcoming Convergence 2010, with the Microsoft Dynamics Customer Excellence Award for Excellence in Industry Implementation.

This is a great achievement, and speaks volumes to the effort American Apparel and Sunrise did, with working together to make American Apparel's Dynamics AX implementation a success, and a continued success after their go live.

Microsoft Convergence 2010 - Coming soon!

Well spring is officially here, and that means Microsoft Convergence is not that far behind. It will be here before you know it.

Yesterday I got an email stating that the Convergence Connect is now open. I made sure to fill out my information. It's a great tool, along with the schedule builder to help connect with others that will be there.

Decisions 2010 - A MSDW hosted Virtual Conference for Microsoft Dynamics

Today MSDynamicsWorld.com launched the new Decisions 2010 virtaul conference web site. With that they have set the date for their second Decision, Microsoft Dynamics focused virtaul conference.

MSDynamicsWorld.com has just openned registration for Decisions 2010, the Dynamics-focused virtual conference. This is the second year MSDW is hosting such a conference. Before we get into the details of Decisions 2010, lets reflect a little bit about Decisions 2009.

1.) How successful, from MSDW's perspective, was Decisions 2009? What messaures do you base that success on?

"We were very happy with the outcome of Decisions 2009 last October. We've studied the event from a variety of angles and we think all of them were successful to some degree. We had about 2500 registered attendees, which we think was great for a first event, especially since it only included AX and NAV topics. Our sponsors received an average of over 210 booth visits each, which they were happy about, and our attendees told us afterwards through surveys that they found the virtual environment easy to navigate for attending sessions, getting product information at booths, and networking. And of course the speakers did a great job.

Everyone from the keynote speakers like Altimeter Group partner Ray Wang to Aberdeen Group's Cindy Jutras to a variety of Microsoft product managers to some outstanding AX and NAV experts like Scott Hamilton, Vjekoslav Babic, and many others. It was really a great set of presenters and presentations.

And for most people involved, including us, this was the first experience with a virtual conference. We felt confident in the virtual experience, but it was still a bit of a risk for us to do a new event on a new platform. But we knew there were significant benefits in terms of convenience, cost, and flexibility, and we were glad to see that it worked out so well."

2.) What lessons were learned with Decisions 2009, and how will they help with Decisions 2010?

"There are quite a few things we are refining for Decisions 2010, but the core of the event will be quite similar. One thing we observed was that in the virtual environment, attendees still want ways to connect with each other and talk about Dynamics topics that matter to them. So there was lots of activity in the networking lounge, but there was only one chat area for everyone to share.

We'll be looking at various ways to improve the networking experience this time with targeted chat rooms, moderated chat sessions, and maybe some other things. Another thing we learned was that people want plenty of free time to network and visit the exhibit hall. So we are building in much more time between sessions while still packing in as much great content as we can. And finally, we felt that branding the 2009 event as two events - AX and NAV - was a little cumbersome.

So Decisions 2010 is a single unified event with carefully organized content to make it easy for attendees to find the sessions, exhibitors, and networking opportunities that will be right for them."

3.) How successful was Decisions 2009 for Partners and Customers? What messaures is this success based on, and can you give some success story examples?

"Based on our surveys after the show, the event was extremely positive for Partners and Customers. The responses were pretty similar for both groups. Over 90% described the event as easy to navigate - in fact only about 5% of these groups thought it was difficult. And about 95% of each of these groups said they were able to find product information from exhibitors either 'very easily' or 'somewhat easily'.

As for success stories, the stories that caught our attention were booth visitors who really took an interest in the exhibitor's products. We know that several attendees set up serious sales meetings with exhibitors during the early hours of the show.

The other big win we thought was showing people that a virtual event can work when executed correctly. Most people had previously never attended a virtual conference or attended one that was lacking in fundamental ways. Many people told us how good their experience was in the virtual environment, and that gives us much more confidence for running virtual events in the future."

4.) What was the biggest viewed speaker session, and why do you think that was viewed the most?

"It was essentially a tie between the various Microsoft speakers and R "Ray" Wang for the most session attendees. People are always hungry for more product information from Microsoft, so there were lots of questions from the audience and those presentations took up a good portion of the program. And Ray is a well-respected name in enterprise software, so his perspective always gets a lot of attention and we were grateful to have him participate."

Now with this knowledge about Decisions 2009, lets move forward and talk about the upcoming Decisions 2010.

1.) What prompted MSDW to hold the Decisions 2010 after Convergence, but so close to the timing of Convergence?

"Timing of conferences is always a tricky decision, but in this case we felt that an independent event after Convergence that didn't require travel or registration fees would be a great venue for anyone with a point of view on the Dynamics product line to attend sessions, talk about the products, and discuss the real world challenges that they face in their day-to-day work. There will no doubt be a lot to learn at Convergence 2010 in Atlanta, and we expect attendees and presenters alike to come to Decisions 2010 with plenty to discuss. "

2.) What will be new this Decisions 2010?

"First, we are expanding the event to include GP and CRM. Second, we are really expanding the particpation of Dynamics experts outside of Microsoft. Like I was saying earlier, Convergence 2010 will allow Microsoft to share its latest and greatest stuff with the entire Dynamics ecosystem, and this is something that everyone looks forward to. So we think there is a great opportunity for the rest of that ecosystem to put their voices out there and talk about what they know or want to learn about after Convergence."

3.) What topics do you feel will matter the most to customers during this upcoming virtual conference?

"Overall, we think customers want to make the best possible informed decisions for managing their Dynamics solution in this challenging economic environment. The decision to upgrade, customize, expand, or even just maintain the status quo with their ERP or CRM solution is never taken lightly. And there are so many unique needs for each customer like their industry, or the features they use, or the add-ons they deploy, that there are literally endless possible topics that at least some group would find interesting.

So we have selected a wide variety of compelling topics for sessions across 5 tracks - AX, CRM, GP, NAV, and an Executive track - that will cover things like specific features and components, industry needs, deployment, adoption, working with service providers, and more."

4.) Do you expect more partners and customers at 2010 vs. 2009?

"We do expect more partners and customers at Decisions 2010. We've expanded the event to include CRM and GP, and we have a very loyal readership for both of those topics on MSDynamicsWorld.com, so we hope they sign up and see what it's all about.

And based on what attendees told us after Decisions 2009, the vast majority were willing to attend another virtual conference since it's so convenient and cost-effective. So we hope to see a lot of return attendees."

An interview with DynamicsAnywhere - Joop van Voorthuijsen

Back in Nov. of last year, I posted breaking news about DynamicsAnywhere, a new ISV focused on the delivery of Mobile solutions for the Dynamics ERP line.

After doing this, their VP of Business Development, and someone that has been involved with AX and NAV for a long time, Joop van Voorthuijsen contacted me about reviewing what they are offering for Dynamics AX, and possibly doing an interview.

After taking a look at their published documentation, I decided to take Joop up on the interview. The following is that interview.:

1.) Joop, recently DynamicsAnywhere was formed, can you give in your words the goals and focus of what DynamicsAnywhere is trying to achieve, and what all they offer?

Dynamics Anywhere enables companies to reduce costs and increase user productivity by using state of the art Mobile Business Solutions. The team of Dynamics Anywhere has a long history in mobile business solutions and is focused on creating and distributing powerful mobile business solutions for Microsoft Dynamics AX and NAV.

Our mobile solutions are available wordwide via the global network of Microsoft Dynamics partners. Our goal is to become one of the leading ISV’s for Mobile Business Solutions for Microsoft Dynamics.

Dynamics Anywhere’s Mobile Solutions for Microsoft Dynamics NAV and AX have several properties that make those solutions really unique:

1) Fully integrated in Dynamics NAV and AX. This assures that our Mobile Solutions will work perfectly within a existing Microsoft Dynamics environment.

2) Completely based on Microsoft technology. Our mobile solutions are based on familiar Microsoft products like Windows Server and IIS and do not use any (3rd party) middleware. This makes implementation and support very easy.

3) Extremely flexible. Each solution can be tailored to specific customer needs with a range of available settings in Dynamics. And if necessary, it is also possible to enhance or modify our solutions in the same way as you can modify Dynamics

2.) With Dynamics Anywhere Framework, DAW, from a technical perspective what all does this offer a customer / partner?

With help of the Dynamics Anywhere Framework basically every (customized) role or function could be supported by a mobile solution. On top of our Dynamics Anywhere Framework we deliver also pre-configured role’s of functions like for example Order Picking. With mainly only configuring and when needed small pieces of coding partners are able to make all kinds of role’s and functions ready for mobile use! 3.) What all phone platforms are supported with DAW?

As I mentioned earlier the only requirement for the device is a browser! So, almost any Windows Mobile/CE device with a browser is supported. Also other platforms with a browser like Android and iPhone will work. We also support keyboards, function-keys, barcode scanning and RFID reading!



4.) Is there a full version 1.0 for Dynamics AX?

We started with our AX Anywhere solutions last year and we just started also with our NAV Anywhere solutions. The architecture of both solutions are similar.

On our website you’ll find a factsheet about the Dynamics Anywhere Framework which is ready for the market and already implemented a couple of times. On top of this Dynamics Anywhere Framework we also deliver predefined and preconfigured functions like AX Anywhere Logistics I which is available now and supports already processes like Goods Receipt and Order Picking. We also have already a first version of AX Anywhere Field Sales available end of this month.

5.) What is the roadmap for DAW, for Dynamics AX, and do you plan on publishing it?

During the coming months we’ll launch more pre-configured roles and functions but don’t forget that partners are already able to make almost every process ready for mobile use themselves with help of our Dynamics Anywhere Framework. We’ll publish this roadmap roughly on our website and with our partners we’ll define priorities about the roadmap as well.

6.) Does the DAW offer full flexibility for custom code in AX, and also offering technical consultants and their customers ability to customize and work with the DAW other than standard offerings?

Yes that is one of the important elements we already defined in the beginning. The Dynamics partners are able to add customer specific functions or change our standard functions. That’s one of the disadvantages of many other solutions using middleware, for their partners it is very difficult and expensive to make customizations.

7.) What is the current install base for DAW, and what all industries is this already in use, or planned for use?

Dalosy, one of the mother companies from Dynamics Anywhere, is already active with mobile solutions since 1976! They were one of the first companies starting with barcode solutions. Their installed base is huge and in many lines of business you find their customers. Last year the middleware solution has been replaced by the Dynamics Anywhere Framework. The first customers are implemented already and are already live. Of course there is a focus on trade, retail, manufacturing and distribution, but we expect a strong growth in lines of business where mobile business solutions will be introduced. That’s also the prediction of many analysts around the world.

8.) Is the DAW and the total DynamicsAnywhere solution offered through the Microsoft Partner channel? Do you train partners, and allow them to control their customers, or do you require partners to allow DynamicsAnywhere and your consultants to run and control DAW part of a given implentation?

Our solutions are indeed offered through the Microsoft Partner channel! We’ll train our partners in a couple of days and they are able to implement the solution for their customers. In order to guarantee good projects we will be assisting the partners in their first implementations. We also offer our partners a sales training focusing on making customers aware of the possibilities. On our website you will find the upcoming trainings under Events!

9.) Does the DAW offer any disconnected state ability? Meaning, does the device have to have internet or network connectivity in order to make use of the DAW, or is there any local store that takes place so devices can go offline for a while, and to use DAW based solutions?

More than 90% of our prospects need a online solution. In order to ensure a stable solution we have developed ‘state persistence’ which means that the status in kept in the Dynamics database. When a device is temporary out of range, empty or damaged, you can continue the job as soon as the device is ready again from the point where the job stopped. End of 2010 we’ll come up with several options for offline possibilities.

This is a build vs. buy, like all software, and so like all software the needs of the given project at hand will drive if the DynamicsAnywhere Framework (DAW), is a good fit.

Convergence 2010: Hot-lanta here we come!
