VSLive - New York & Focus on Metro UX

I wanted to bring together in today's post some great cross conference, and cross technology information - that of course applies directly to Microsoft Dynamics AX! To help set the stage, lets reference back to my coverage and promotion of the VSLive Event in Las Vegas.

Based on the feedback from that event in Vegas, there was some really great sessions that apply directly to Microsoft Dynamics AX. Specifically what I was most interested in, and what Kees Hertogh - Director of Product Development for Microsoft Dynamics AX, recently wrote about: Metro UX and it's impact on the future client of Microsoft Dynamics.

Image Provided By Microsoft

The above image, comes from a recent article that Kees wrote, talking about the efforts the product team is making, in the embrace of Windows 8 OS and the Metro UX. I first starting writing about this in Jan., and had an article that was picked myself by ZDNet here.: Microsoft Dynamics AX - The future Client Win8 / HTML5.

Kees' recent article, points and shows off this in action.: Introducing modern business application with Metro style design. In this article, Kees shows off the investments being made by the product team for making use of the Metro UX. Further, he goes on to ask for input and feedback. What does the community think of this effort, being put forth by the product team? This is where we cross now, into the VSLive conference, and specifically to Brian Randell's session "Building Metro Style Apps - Getting the UX Right.

With this focus, I virtually sat down with Brian and asked him a few questions. These were in reference to the article posted by Kees, as well as his own session and focus around the Metro UX design. The following is the result of that interview.:

1.Brian, if you don't mind can you speak a bit to the type of audience and people that you will be targeting with you session "Building Metro Style Apps Getting the UX Right" and some high-value take away's from someone attending?

"The primary target is developers. From there, it’s really any team member who’s concerned with user experience."

2. With the focus on getting the UX right for Metro Style App design, can you comment on the recent story, from Microsoft's Own Kees Hertogh, Director of Product Development for Microsoft Dynamics AX?

"I think the article provides a great concept that Metro style apps are not just for consumers. You can build great LOB Metro style apps that both consume and create/modify data. If you look at the first screen shot in the article, you’ll see a very “digital dashboard” type UX (to dig up an old term from the late 90’) rich information display in a heads up format. Beyond you still can create an immersive experience that lets you create and change data."

3. With the push of Enterprise Apps to the Metro Style design, can you give a few value points as to what metro brings, for people who are use to traditional style Windows UX, that might not be so obvious but for sure add value and increase productivity?

"A key point is having applications laser focused on the user and the data that’s being presented; remove the chrome and have data center stage. With “big data”, we need to have better ways of visualizing data and Metro is a ripe design language to use for that."

4. In talking in terms of app design, in general, can you speak to some of the things you like best about the Metro UI design approach, compared to traditional Windows UX design?

"I think number one is that I get a clean slate. I’m not beholding to a lot of the traditional UI conventions. I own the screen. I can create an experience the draws my user in and lets them get to the point. One type of application that’s shown popularity in the mobile device space are “data snacking” applications. These applications provide a rich view on a narrow band of data. To something simple but do it very well. I like the built-in metro templates that make it easy to create tiles of information. I can use the tile to summarize and then provide a great drill down to more detailed data. I can do all of this with a touch and a swipe. The templates provide structure for the design challenged. Then once you understand the basic structure, you can dig into layout and color theory, so you can go beyond. The key is that there’s a nice baseline. It does mean that folks need to work with a designer and push the limits however."

I would like to take the time to thank Brian for his feedback on the VSLive session, as well as great information around the Metro UX design - and specifically being able to tie this back directly to Microsoft Dynamics AX. I think a critical point here that Brian makes, and that it seems the AX product team is getting right from the start, is a focus on "have data center stage". This is critical for the success of Metro style apps, and specifically applies without a doubt to Microsoft Dynamics AX. Well that's all for this post, I hope everyone has a great Dynamics day! Make sure to sign up for VSLive event, if you can, and check back soon as more to come. Till Next time!

Microsoft's Cloud Positions, become ever so clear

So I could not help but try to come up with a title that played on clouds, with the word clear.

This is however somewhat of a true statement, as well as an intended pun. One of the things I talked heavy on at AXUG Summit this year, in Orlando was about Cloud Computing. In my executive track, I actually hardly mentioned Dynamics AX.

For reference, here are direct links to my Slide Decks for the two sessions on cloud computing I lead.:

So, with the EXE02 session, the whole goal and point was to paint a good picture of what cloud computing is today. That was actually the hardest one to come up with, because of filtering through all the marketing fluff / hype that exists around cloud computing.

I Did land however, on four real area's.: SaaS, IaaS, PaaS and PCS (Personal Cloud Services - a Mix bag of types)

It's nice to know that I was right in-line with how Microsoft see's the cloud as well. Read the following post from Mary Jo, over at ZDNet, found here: Microsoft plays the PaaS card to better position its cloud platform

Microsoft is really pushing the PaaS offerings from Azure and what makes Microsoft different from other cloud vendors. Also, the fact that, the 'All In' cloud is correct in that Microsoft is a cloud vendor that has offerings in all the area's. Including PCS, with LiveDrive, LiveMesh offerings.

Why does this matter? Well I have been talking about cloud computing for over 4 years now, and declared this year to be the year of the cloud. (2010: Year of the Cloud).

This matters to AX Partners that are VAR's, ISV's, as well and even more too Customers. This matter's because one day Microsoft ERP will be developed for the cloud first, and what runs in the cloud or runs on premise will be of choice for a customer. To the information worker this does not matter, as long as it's secure, reliable, and able to get the information needed to get that workers day complete.

This means scale, beyond what you can think, and back to only what is needed. Having a plan now, and understanding what you can do with Dynamics AX 2009 and the cloud right now is the first step in seeing how the cloud can enable your company to scale beyond what it currently can imagine.

The second session I did, listed above on TECH05 is a dive into the Technical side of the Azure Cloud Platform, and also Architect level visio diagrams, at a high level, showing several ways cloud LOB applications can be integrated with AX 2009 today.

That's all for now, check back soon and till next time!

Happy Halloween!

Well Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, is upon us! I actually love this time of year, and love carving pumpkins with my girls, telling ghost stories and having fright-fest movie nights.

Something about a creepy good scare to make you laugh and have a good time. With that, ZDNet has post some scare-tech things to watch out for! My fav, is the Smartphone Zombies! 2010 Top Scary Trends in Tech

I would also add to this list hungry tech Ogers!

What I am talking about is the big boys gabbing up and swallowing whole smaller tech companies. There are a lot of factors that is building up to this, but I think you will see this pick up speed, and also even in the Dynamics Ecosystem. With the recent changes to the MPN, it seems as though smaller partners will need to align or get bought by bigger partners to continue to be a player in the ecosystem.

Well hope you all have a fun, safe, scary and Happy Halloween / All Hallows Eve!

I will see some of you, virtaully, on Monday for Decisions 2010, AX day!

Tech execs betting on enterprise mobility

Today ZDNet is reporting in a new article that more and more Tech Executives are betting on enterprise mobility for the upcoming year. The full article can be read here.: Tech execs betting on enterprise mobility; Apple's iOS, Android ride along

Looking at this article we see the following two graphs, with the first being (currently) supported mobile devices.:

And application planned adoption.:

What very intersting in this is what we see for offical support, based on the respondants to ZDnet. We still see Blackberry and Windows Mobile being the top two for Enterprise Apps, while Apple's iOS is listed third.

Moving foward looking at the applications that will be adopted, and based on the ZDNet article, we see that mobile LOB (Line Of Business) apps are targeted as the next big opportunity for the mobile enterprise.

Recently, I have posted about how a cusotmer can extend their Dynamics AX investment to the Apple iOS platform with the iPhone and iPad. This is still true, and also true for the Blackberry and Windows Mobile platforms as well.

Dynamics ax on the iPad and iphone
More on Dynamics AX and the iPad

What I am seeing however, with more and more push of the Apple iOS platform into the enterprise is that Apple's iOS platform will become more and more offically supported by enterprise Technology Depts.

The article does not show what depts plan to offically support, but I would be willing to bet that the Apple iOS would be one of the top platforms, if that was one of the metrics of this report.

I agree with ZDnet in their article, that mobile LOB applications are the next thing for enterprise, and this goes well beyond email and contacts, as pointed out in the article itself.

Your talking more and more productive applications, that do more than offer consumption. That actually extend a customers enterprise investments, beyond their walls, into the cloud, and on into the mobile land scape.

With the Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Apple iOS and Andriod OS as choices, along with numerous ways to cloud enable or on-presise host integrations to mobile LOB applications to a customers backend investments, how does a company make the right choice for moving forward with this? For moving forward with mobile LOB application planning, development, build vs. buy vs. customize?

I think that with the cloud, and integration options, along with the four mentioned mobile / device platforms, it's easy to see that could be a mixed bag actually. And why not right? No need for a device vendor lock in.

If you take Microsoft Dynamics AX ERP platform, in how flexible and open it is. Then mix in Windows Azure, Google's AppEngine, or even on-premise services, then the device becomes a light or mid sized client, depending on the need of the LOB application.

A mid-sized companies, with today's options, does not have to have an IT staff that knows everything about all platforms. They also don't have to have a vendor lock in either.

Being flexible, and with a little research, IT depts' can remain open minded to the LOB application needs of their companies, and use that to drive the choice. So if you have a Dynamics AX ERP investment, and in turn have a hyrbid mix of services in the cloud and on-premise, Windows Mobile could be your phone and the Apple iPad could be the tablet / slate device. And both can work with these services that help create mobile LOB applications that extend your enterprises reach.

I hope this continues to help drive thought around not being locked in, but looking at the needs of the business, and the needs of the LOB apps, to drive how this will get done for your company. From there is could also be a mixed bag of inhouse development, VAR based development, and purchased third party mobile Apps that complete a total mobile LOB solution for a companies needs.

That's all for now on the topic, however check back soon as this will continue to be a hot topic for the remainder of the year and well into next year. I have some interesting things coming out soon actually just on the mobile enterprise LOB topic, including extending Dynamics AX!

More on Dynamics AX and the iPad

Recently, I wrote an article about having Dynamics AX run on the iPad. This article can be found at the following link.: Dynamics ax on the iPad and iphone

That post, though very, very high level - got a lot of interest. I thought that there was for sure an interest level for the iPad in the enterprise markter. This confirmed, that even for Microsoft Dynamics AX, the iPad has a place.

In the first post, I covered some high level thought processes about the iPad, and the development of native applications for extending a customers Backend software investment, like Dynamics AX.

Now I wanted to Jump into another topic on how a customer can extend their Dynamics AX investment with an iPad.

What I am talking about is RDP. Remote Desktop. With the iPhone, it was hard to use Remote Desktop. The size alone it the main issue. However with the iPad, you have plently of space to work with.

So now what RDP ot VNC application to use? Well after doing some extensive looks, I found that Jump Desktop - RDP iPad App.

This is a very useful iPad app, and priced decent as well. I have personally used this to connect to a Widnows Server and run AX. The way that Jump Desktop does the mouse, and windows keyboard on the iPad is very easy to get use to and make use of.

The only issue is TS or RD Gateway support is not yet released. However I have talked with the developers personally and they are adding this support. Once that's there, I don't see why any other RDP will be needed on the market.

So with this, you get RDP access, nearly like you have when you RDP from a Windows Machine or Mac machine.

This is another way to extend AX, through the use of Remote Desktop. With the iPad's ability to connect to most VPN's, you now have a way to be productive from your iPad on your Dynamics AX investment.

Now if you still don't see the iPad's use and also interest from Companies in using the iPad with their enterprise software, then take a look at this latest article, which agrees with what I am saying about the iPad.: Apple's iPad, iPhone and an enterprise halo effect.

Enterprises are very interested, and they want to use the iPad. It's coming to businesses, and it's use will only continue to climb.

With all this talk of RDP, still for the most true use of the iPad, and as I stated in my first post, the true benefits of an iPad can best be realized with native applications.

This means having Objective-C based apps, built for the iPad, that connect to either on-premise services, or cloud based services for extending your enterprise software to the iPad.

There are all kinds of uses for the iPad in the Enterprise, and specifically relating to Microsoft Dynamics AX.

That's all for now. I have some very interesting interviews coming up soon. Look for those. Also look for the continued series of post on the iPad and Business desire for it's use with their ERP and other LOB investments!

Get in the Cloud with Dynamics AX

I openned this year up with a focus on calling 2010 'The Year of the Cloud.'

I truly believe, and have already seen that 2010 is more than just the year of the cloud, but it's a kick off point really to a decade of cloud computing. Check out the following article from ZDNet.: Will economic conditions trigger a cloud computing avalanche?

In this, ZDNet author, Joe McKendrick, points out that after major economic downturns, a new wave of technology advances take place. And since we are just now coming out of a deep recession, does that mean a Cloud Revolution is upon us?

Well I stick with what I have been saying all along, my answer to this is yes. Not only does the technology exists, now, but also the times are right for projects to start getting kicked off from an economic stand point.

So what does this mean for Dynamics AX? After all Dynamics AX is an ERP platform, so how can the cloud help Dynamics AX?

In my recent, Interview with Microsoft Distinguished Engineer - Mike Ehrenberg, I asked Mike about the cloud, and what Microsoft's vision is for Dynamics and Dynamics AX. His was response was this.:

"In Dynamics, and across Microsoft, we are focused on the ability to combine software plus services – on-premise assets with the cloud – using each to their maximum advantage to deliver the best capabilities to our customers. We are doing that today, extending our on-premise and on-line products with cloud-based services – in some cases developed by us, and increasingly working with others developed by partners."

He goes on.:
We are really focused on three types of solutions where the cloud simply is better.: Connection of the business system to the public internet, Large volumes of shared data that is frequently changing, Connected supply chains.
(To View the full details, please use the link above.)

So with these three major areas for the cloud and Dynamics AX, we get an idea of what Microsoft's vision the cloud can and will play with Dynamics AX ERP implementations for customers.

So what about how? Well with Dynamics AX 2009, you can now working with .Net 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010. (ie: Visual Studio 2010 and .Net 4.0 Passed Compatibility Testing with Dynamics AX) This means that creating and working with Cloud projects is really easy.

All you need is Visual Studio 2010, and the VSCloud Service Project / Windows Azure installed. Once you have that, without having an Azure account even, you can develop, and debug cloud based services, ASP.NET Web roles, and Worker Processes that all can be deployed and access via the cloud. This also means you can make use of SQL Azure, for cloud based SQL Server Data Services as a Service.

So with this, you can develop services, and use WCF communications, to allow AX 2009 to make service references, in which X++ code could call Azure based services.

Right there, you have a hybrid cloud, in which on-premise AX is running, and connecting to Cloud based services to enable a given process, processes or solutions.

Now I have not even talked about what might could be done with IaaS, or Infastructure as a Service offered by Amazon EC2. With this, you can have a cloud based VM, that is not pure cloud services, offered by Azure, but can target SQL Server and Windows Server images, and therefore (I have not tested this yet!) Dynamics AX running in the cloud, on Amazon EC2 hosted images.

So the cloud for that possibility is the Infastructure needs, Network, RAM, CPU, Power, etc. This would be more like a Hosted version of AX in a colocation, except it's a lost easier to quickly bring up images and servers, using Amazons EC2 services, without having to order servers, etc.

Alright, so this is all now. In the not to distant future, ProISV and it's AX.NET Server offering, (ProISV talks about AX.NET offering compared to Future DAX .Net offerings), will help bridge the gap even further with Dynamics AX 2009, allowing for Cloud facing applications like a SilverLight application, to consume services exposed via AX.NET, on presmise, and through the firewall over HTTPS / TCP.NET, Cloud services and Cloud Facing Front Ends could actually work directly with Dynamics AX X++ code and data.

Therefore you could move entire processes to the cloud, and still have on-premise control over your ERP, Data, Business logic and processes.

Hopefully, in this post, the point is clear... there are many, many options for what can exist now in the cloud. We see Microsoft's vision for the cloud, and it's beyond cost savings and operational based thinking.

If we take the vision, and the technologies then we can take customers real business problems, there problem domains, and use this to help create a better, faster, cheaper -- and cloud connected solutions that enable customers to be more dynamic and more agile than ever before.

So here to a new Decade of cloud computing, in which we are just now embarking on!

That's all for now, I hope to use this post though as a starting point to get into some real life Solution Designs with Dynamics AX + The Cloud. To show how things can connect, how this all works together, and the biggest reason of --- why! Check back soon and often!

A Bernie Madoff For the Tech Industry

Ok, so my blog focuses on Microsoft Dynamics AX. This means at times, the focus spans into different area's of Microsoft. This includes, SQL Server, .Net, SharePoint, etc.

At times though it must include different business elements. Today it includes a story that is unfolding in the tech industry that could be considered a Bernie Madoff level hoax and scam?

Why is this? Well it does not involve massive amounts of money, though a dollar amount could be traced to the years of lies that have been pushed on people. But it does involve massive amounts of data. Performance data. What's at the heart of this? Devil Mountain Software! Who is that? Randall C. Kennedy!

This name, and the company will go down in history as false, hoax, scam, scamware, etc. There is an amazing report done by the ZDNet staff, direct link can be found here.: Why we don't trust Devil Mountain Software (and neither should you)

From the post.:
"Devil Mountain Software has been a thorn in the side of Microsoft for years and is adept at garnering headlines. The latest effort is a report claiming that 86 percent of Windows 7 PCs were gobbling up too much memory. Can you trust these findings and the company overall? The short answer: No. Here’s why... ...Buckle in, because this tale goes from zero to X-files in minutes!"

This reads like a fiction story, but it's reality. And any company, or anyone that has the XPNet software installed should be warned now! Remove the scamware! It's a information mining operation, used to disinform, and create scareware for the benefit of one person.: Randall C. Kennedy

I would like to thank the ZDNet staff for an amazing job in getting the truth out!

So why post here? Because it matters. The truth matters, and ignorance is always the enemy. It also matters because Mr. Ranadall C. Kennedy has for years attacked Microsoft, with made up information that suites his writing needs.

I recommend you make yourself aware of the software, the name, and the company. All three should be black listed. They are for me!

That's all for now, I have some really good posts in the works, including continuing down the WCF path with Dynamics AX.

Silverlight works so well... that people are fired because of it?

So this is just to much to not post on. I post about silverlight, or have, in talking about how it can be used with Dynamics AX. Basically it's Microsoft Flash killer. You can use it to create RIA, or Rich Interactive Applications with.

Will NetFlix uses it, and because their software they developed with Silverlight works so well, they are getting rid of 50 technical jobs. Can you believe that?

Check out the article: ZDNet: The steep price of good technology

Chalk one up for Silverlight... and check back soon!

Dynamics AX 2009 - Released

As the name of the post suggest, the next version of Dynamics AX, Dynamics AX 2009 (formely known as DAX 5.0) has been released. This has happened ahead of schedule than expected (and as earilier reported) which is a great thing for a software package. To be released before the targeted date.

Now this release has been covered in great detail by all sorts of web sites and blogs. Here are a few direct links for your reading pleasure:

Also, here is a link to the image gallery on Microsoft's site for seeing some of the publicly approved images for the release:
Image Gallery for Dynamics AX 2009

So with all of this great press coverage, what more can someone say about the release of Dynamics AX 2009? Honestly, a lot more! To start it off, we are just now starting this, and we have so much to go over like:

  • Whats new technically for Dynamics AX 2009

  • How to take advantage of the new technial features in DAX 2009

  • What are some of the under the cover improvements to the solution, and what does that mean for customers

  • etc. etc. etc.

We have a whole list of things that we have to start covering, as well as how different products from the rest of the newly released stack of offerings, likes SQL Server 2008, MOSS 2007, SilverLight, .Net 3.0 / 3.5, Web Parts, Web Services, Mobile Development, All how they fit into this wonderful application product that sits on top of the Microsoft Business Stack called Dynamics AX.

I believe the following was righly stated by Kees Hertogh, Director of Product Management for Dynamics AX:
“What Halo is for Xbox, we are for Microsoft’s application platform.”

With this said, I think we have a lot to be excited about in the Dynamics AX space, and I am looking forward to giving you real examples, designs, interviews, reviews all moving towards the Dynamics AX 2009 product!

Some Highlights & Thank Yous

First let me say I hope everyone is enjoying TechEd conference. A lot of great information was blogged yesterday from TechEd. I am really excited about, espcailly Oslo, the modelling concept from Microsoft for speeding up development.

With that said, I have some highlights and thanks yous of my own to post about here. First Mary Jo Foley from Her Blog 'All About Microsoft' from ZDNet, picked up my Q&A interview with Klaus and Doug from Microsoft. This was picked up in here blog post on the release of Dynamics AX 2009:

Dynamics AX 2009: The ‘Halo’ for Microsoft’s app platform

I was picked up as being quoted on this post, and a direct link to my interview as seen at the bottom of here post:

I wanted to take the time and thank Mary Jo for not only the honor of being picked up on her blog, but also for all the hard work she does in covering Microsoft.

Next, and more related back to TechEd this week, I am currently being spotlighted on TechEd Bloggers(.net) home page. TechEd editors choose a few bloggers to spotlight, that they pick up post from, and I happened to be one of the lucky ones. So I wanted to say thank you to the TechEd editoral staff, including Kathy!

You can see my spotlight on there home page, and also I have captured in a screen shot below here:

So a lot of cool and great stuff going on this week with information, TechEd, and last but for sure not least the release of Dynamics AX 2009. I plan on doing a lot of post about DAX 2009 continued at MSDynamicsWorld.com as well as expanding on those from this blog.

Search, and the SharePoint OS

Alright well I came across Marry Jo's Posting over at ZDNet: ZDnet Post

She talks about MS buying Fast Search, for 1.23 Billion. This deal, along with the new tauting of 'SharePoint Online', a hosted version of SharePoint for clients with >= 5000 seats means I agree with Mary, in that SharePoint being the next big OS from MS, has search as a big reason.

So let's think about all the peices of the puzzle we have now: The Cloud, Hosted SharePoint and soon CRM / ERP Live.

This means a very true Hybrid approach for companies, in which some peices of the solution will be hosted, and some will be on site. (ie: MRP, Sensitive data, etc.) that will be offered up in a mashed up, Software+Services approach.

Man this is a very exciting year, and we are just now getting started. So what I just talked about above, is impact for some years out. What about Dynamics AX 5.0? It's set to be released this coming summer, and by that time the purchase of Fast Search will be complete. So what could be done with Microsoft's Search Server and Fast Search, with Dynamics AX 5.0?

* Office as the front end! *

I believe that this will lend to having more and more Office as the Front end applications with the Office 2007 System, and Dynamics AX 5.0. Why? Search and SharePoint! (Also throw in there PerformancePoint Server) More details to come as I continue to post about why I think this lends itself for Office being the front end, more than ever with the release of Dynamics AX 5.0.

Check back soon as I continue post, and we continue to discover and opine about the future!

Dynamics AX implementation Sound Advice

I found some sound advice, that really applies to Dynamics AX here: ZDNet Post Link.

This kind of advice is sound advice, and truly applies to all projects, that have similar nature. This post talks about SOA project implementation. Even though that is the case, still it applies to ERP / Dynamics AX project implementations. I thought the advice was too good, not to share.

Microsoft Online / Offline Sync Services

Well here is something I am for sure keeping a watch on. That is the Microsoft Sync, Online / Offline development offerings. This is suppose to cover even for such as ADO.Net. This will for sure be something widely used and play into the future developments of Dynamics AX.

Check out he ZDNet post here: ZDNet Post

You can start developing now for such usage in your applications and possible needs for working with Dynamics AX data offline and sync back up. There are all kind of possibilities with the offering, and it's not just for Windows Mobile Applications, either! :-)
